The lake in the mountains

The lake in the mountains
Lake Augstsee lies at 1,643 m and has a depth of up to 9 meters. Several springs, which rise on the Atterkogel and Hochanger just above the lake shore, serve as tributaries. However, the majority of the lake water comes from precipitation and meltwater.
As a result of the winter of the century 2018/19, the lake was still covered by a closed ice sheet on July 1st. The Karsee is drained via a sinkhole on the southern shore, which re-emerges next to the Loseralm parking lot.
A few decades ago, Mr. and Mrs. Gaiswinkler from Altaussee stocked Arctic char. On the very same day, the fish sought a path towards the watercourse, disappeared into the sinkhole and ended up at the parking lot. Numerous helping hands brought the fish back to the lake and a grid was installed, but only a few specimens can still be found in Lake Augstsee alongside gudgeons and brook loaches.
More than 30 lakes - or so-called "Lacken" - are located in the Totes Gebirge. Interesting stories and watercolors about these waters can be found in the book "Der See im Gebirge" by Nora Schönfellinger and Burgl Schramml.
Just a few minutes' walk from the Loseralm is the easily accessible lake Augstsee, one of the many hiking destinations on the Loser.
